Verney Carron Impact Plus

The History of Verney Carron

Gunsmith Claude Verney (1800–1870), who came from a line of distinguished gunsmiths dating back to 1650, began the business in 1820. At the age of 20, he earned first place in an armory competition sponsored by the City of Saint–Etienne. Later, in 1830, he married Antoinette Carron, a descendant of another family of gunsmiths, and renamed his company Verney-Carron. When Claude Verney passed away in 1870, his eldest son Jean took over the company with his brothers. That is why the company was formerly known as Verney-Carron Frères before being changed back to its original name in 1917 following Jean's passing.

Six manufacturers were brought together as the company was rebuilt following World War II to form the Groupement d'Exploitation des Fabricants d'Armes Réunis (GEFAR). Over 150,000 rifles were produced, most of them going by the brand name Pionnier. The company entered the era of modern industrial production in 1954 when it agreed to license the production of the product to a little-known Italian manufacturer who had just finished developing an extremely light semi-automatic hunting shotgun.

In 1963, Verney-Carron acquired SIFARM, which included renowned barrel maker Jean Breuil and the venerable manufacturers Berthon Frères, Francisque Darne, Didier-Drevet, Gerest, and Ronchard-Cizeron. The Sagittaire, the first over-under French shotgun to be mass-produced, was introduced in 1966 and quickly rose to the top of the market. Between 1970 and 1975, production more than doubled. A highly challenging phase, however, was followed up to the 1980s by the corporation closing the facilities at Cours Fauriel to concentrate operations at the mechanical workshops of Boulevard Thiers. During this time, Verney-Carron was awarded the contract for producing sub-assemblies for FAMAS, the French Army's new assault rifle. This partnership, which lasted for more than ten years, helped the business completely revamp its quality control while enabling Verney-Carron to grow consistently in a constantly declining industry.

An over-and-under Sagittaire with a light alloy receiver was developed in 1985, and it was an instant hit, guaranteeing Sagittaire's continued dominance of the market. Three years later, in 1988, the Trap model of the new Super 9 was released, and it was soon followed by a number of additional models, including the Plume model in 1993. The previous Sagittaire line was eventually superseded by the Super 9. Still, one model, the Double Express, was launched in 1989 and, along with the Impact rifle, helped increase sales of barreled weapons. In 1994, a brand-new Sagittaire model known as the "Nouvelle Technologie" was unveiled. It was praised by the entire hunting press and embraced enthusiastically by hunters.

A number of police and law enforcement agencies have since embraced the "Flash-Ball," a brand-new defensive tool that first went on sale in 1990. The "Super Pro," a new Flash-Ball designed for the security industry, was introduced in 1999 and is currently being equipped by the Municipal Police. Over time, it has evolved into one of the fundamental weapons for the French National Police. The Impact Plus, a brand-new bolt-action rifle, was released in 1996. Building on the success of Impact Plus, the Impact Auto carbine—the first and only automatic hunting carbine made in France—was introduced in 2000.

Verney Carron Impact Plus Rifle Review

Verney Carron Impact Plus is a bolt-action rifle released in 1996. The weapon is chambered for long-action calibers and has a two-piston ejection system. Its action features a sturdy bolt, which has three locking lugs that lock directly into the high-precision free-floating barrel.

Ergal receiver is accompanied by a trigger that has an adjustable pull mechanism, which gives the shooter a chance to alter it to his preference. The rifle comes with a Battue rib or a rear sight with an adjustable fiber optic front sight. Its magazine is detachable and has a capacity of three cartridges. At the rear of the rifle, there is a central and a good size safety button that locks the bolt, the firing pin, the trigger, and the trigger bar. In addition, there is a cocking and a loading indicator above.

While weighing about 3000g (6.6 lbs), it has a selected oil-finished walnut stock with a bavarian cheek pad. The rifle's barrel measures 520 mm (20.4-inches) or 600 mm (23.6-inches) while its overall length is 1050-1140 mm (41.3-inches to 44.8-inches).

Pivot mounts are a special kind of repeatable mounts that are especially popular in Europe and mainly produced by European manufacturers. Most notable among them are German Companies like EAW (Ernst Apel Wurzburg), Recknagel, Henneberger and MAK. These Companies were also among the first to produce mounts of this type. Non German companies like Rusan are also following this trend.

Main benefits of pivot mounts, or swing mounts as they are sometimes called are:

  • 100% repeatability,
  • very quick and easy detaching and reattaching,
  • extremely durable; most mounts of this kind are tested on 10000 or more reattachments,
  • size and weight; light and small, elegant.

There are also some minor weaknesses that such mounts posses and they are: they are usually more expensive than other types of mounts, the installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith and most of these mounts are higher than 14 mm.

A distinct feature of pivot/swing mounts is the way the scope attaches to the rifle. The front foot of the mount on the scope is inserted in the front base under a 90 degrees angle to the barrel. Then the entire scope is pivoted around the front base until it is locked into position by the rear base.

Pivot mounts of all types enable windage correction on the rear base at the time of the mounts installation. There are three main types of pivot mounts which are distinguished by the type of the rear base:

  • EAW style rear base: produced by EAW and Rusan,
  • Dovetail rail base: produced by Recknagel, Henneberger, MAK and others.
  • Leupold type rear base
