Nikon Action Ex 16x50 Product description

Nikon Action Ex 16x50 is with its 16x magnification meant for observation distance object as well as details. They have a great price/performance ratio and are water resistant and strong enough to withstand a powerful shock. They are also designed for those with glasses what is welcome for this type of binoculars. The binoculars are great on a tripod what can be expected for such high magnification. Binoculars from Nikon Action Ex series are offering quite a lot for such a good price. The reason lies in their Porro prism system, which outperform the modern Roof prism system. Therefore the size of binoculars is a little bit bigger from other rivals, but on the other hand they are offering better light transmission rate and much more sharp and contrast image. They are designed for those who put optical performance at first place, before modern and compact size. The housing of Nikon Action Ex series is firm, robust and water sealed. They are also filled with dry nitrogen to enables the use at really low temperatures.

How do you rate this product?

A rugged starter choice for high magnification binoculars.

These were previous purchase by my coworkers for regular industrial field work. For their price they were pretty good if you were considering a high magnification lens. They are also quite resilient to the rugged working requirement. Haven’t dunked them in water but it withstood the 5+ years and counting, as how a tool might be treated and washed under the faucet with soap. The rain or water resistance has held up, and works reasonably well with eyeglasses.

Some items which are not so good but expected in this price bracket (until you upgrade to something mid level like Steiner Ranger, Zeiss TERRA, Nikon Monarch, etc) closest focusing distance is still quite far like 7 meters, the rubber armor becomes slick overtime and the adjustment knob is so so for gloved operations. Chromatic Aberration is quite noticeable and tiring, best kept to ~1-3 min intervals of use when using in high contrast and bright locations followed by a rest of ~1minute. Don’t expect too high of a resolution/image sharpness in but they are acceptable for the price.

These are a reasonable pair of starting binoculars and should last most normal daily rigors without babying them; but if you have the budget or plan to glass for some time, go with one with the mid level optics
