The History of Lakelander

The Lakelander rifles find their origin in a design by Swedish inventor Lars Andersson, who was awarded a gold medal for this invention in 1976. The first model, named TAP-174, was introduced in an advertising brochure, featuring a design with 12 locking lugs on the breech block and a removable roll magazine. This model was produced by Finnish arms manufacturer Tampereen Asepaja Oy (TAP).

In 1975, the TAP-375 model was released, which was reportedly designed by two Finnish designers, Torsti Laaksonen and Jali Timari. Over 4,000 Lakelander TAP-375s were produced between 1975 and 1979 before the patent was sold to Kongsberg, as per Laaksonen.

The Lakelander 375 appeared in a Swedish advertising magazine in 1981, featuring several design improvements including 9 locking lugs, a three-point safety, a simplified breech block with an integrated guide sleeve, and a rotating magazine. Eventually, production was moved to Sweden, where it was manufactured under the name Varberger by Norråker's Arms. During this period, several variations of the model were introduced, including the basic model Varberger 757 and a budget model, the Varberger 717.

In the late 80s, Norwegian Defense Technology in Kongsberg started producing rifles based on the original Lakelander design. The model Lakelander 389 was introduced, the number denoting the first weapon's delivery month in 1989.
