The History of Browning

Browning Arms Company was founded in 1880 by the American John Moses Browning, one of the most, if not the most prolific and influential firearm inventor of all time, with the help of his brothers, in Ogden, Utah. A large portion of John Browning's rifle designs have been acquired and produced by other big-name companies, like Winchester, Colt, Remington, Fabrique Nationale of Belgium, and Miroku. Among his most famous guns produced were the 1895 Colt Peacemaker machine gun, the Browning automatic rifle, the .45-caliber pistol, a variety of .30- and .50-caliber machine guns used in World War II; and the Browning Automatic-5 shotgun first introduced in 1902 and still produced to this day. Beside firearms, Browning is also a manufacturer of various other products, such as gun knives, shooting accessories, bicycles, and clothing. In 1977 the Belgian firearms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale (FN) purchased the Browning Company. In 1987 the US Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) was purchased from its former owners. The Winchester brand (licensed from Olin Corporation) was acquired at the same time by FN. In 1990, Société Générale sold the FN company to GIAT Industries.

In 1997, the entire FN family of companies (including Browning and the Winchester) was bought from GIAT by the government of a Belgian region named Waloon and was renamed to Groupe Herstal.

Browning BLR SA Rifle Review

Browning BLR, which stands for Browning Lever-action Rifle, was first introduced in 1971. It was designed by Val Browning, son of the famous John Moses Browning, and is based on the Model 1881 lever-action Winchester rifle. Browning BLR SA is the short action version of the series and features shorter B distance between the holes used for mounting purposes.

Its defining characteristic is the inclusion of a removable magazine which allows it to be loaded with cartridges with pointed tips which was at the time very unusual for a lever-action rifle. The BLR Lightning SA does not have a dedicated manual safety as it features the exposed folding hammer. The fold down position reduces the possibility of hammer coming in contact with the firing pin if accidentally struck. The half-cock position allows for catching the hammer if it slips while cocking. Furthermore, the hammer can be placed in a full-cock position in two ways, namely every time the lever is cycled or manually, by pulling it rearward with the thumb.

The rifle features a rotating receiver bolt with 8 locking lugs that is operated by the lever. It was replaced in 1981 by BLR 81 which was made by Miroku until 1997. BLR 81 had two action lengths and 7 locking lugs. In 1996 another version, the BLR Lightning, was released. The original BLR rifles had a steel receiver, while the latter versions have an aluminum receiver.
