About the Weatherby

In 1945, Roy Weatherby made it his mission to bring the idea of "one shot-kills are best achieved with high-speed and lightweight bullets" into the world of cartridge and rifle making. Ergo, he opened a Weatherby’s Sporting Goods shop in California. This was a humble beginning of the world’s prominent mark on the gun industry.

Travelling back in time, to 1940s, this is when Weatherby began his cartridge business. These paved the way for a vast development in ballistics. Some of his cartridges, including the .257 and .270 Weatherby Magnums, remain the fastest in their calibre class, and are still in production today.

While Weatherby’s cartridge business grew, there was also a need for a bolt-action capable of handling the magnum power. And this is how the legend – the strongest bolt-action rifle Mark V – was born. Soon after, others followed. In the 1960s the company added a line of shotguns called Orion and Athena, a Patrician pump, and Centurion semi-automatics.

Weatherby, Inc. was in for a crazy ride, as in May of 1961, Fred Jennie helped create a prototype model .22 rimfire rifle, which went by the name Mark XXII. The Vanguard rifles were then introduced for some of the world’s most popular big game and varmint cartridges. Weatherby’s son Ed was passed the torch and took over the company in 1983, but he held on to the rifle’s typical looks and the characteristics of being reliable and well-made.

Weatherby Mark V Standard Rifle Review

Roy Weatherby and Fred Jennie designed Mark V in 1955 and in 1957, the bolt action came into production. Until 1973, it was produced by Sauer & Sohn, as Weatherby could not find a manufacturer that met his requirements in the US. "The world’s perfect rifle", as they call it, was originally designed as a 9-lug, push-feed action, but was later made into a hunting rifle, built on both 6-lug, as well as 9-lug receivers.

It is characterized by the widely known Mark V bolt rotation at 54°, which results in quicker reloads and allows to mount scopes extremely close to the bores. The bolt knob is also removable, which leads to a customizable shooting experience. On the mounting surface, on the receiver, we can find four bores – two on the front mounting surface, and two on the rear mounting surface.

Mark V series features two action lengths, namely Standard (this one) and Magnum. The difference between the two is in the distance between the second and third bore on the receiver (on Magnum, the B distance is approximately 5 mm longer). When choosing a mount, this needs to be taken into consideration. Most manufacturers mark the length of the action with the expressions 6-lug bolt or 9-lug bolt. All Mark V rifles with a Standard action length have 6-lug bolts on the action, and those made for Magnum calibres have 9-lug bolts.

Different models feature different barrel lengths (56 cm or 61 cm), but Mark V’s 54° bolts are known to be the shortest in the industry, which allows for faster chambering on follow-up shots. The rifle’s stock is, on some models, made of carbon fibre, which lifts some weight off it. What also reduces weight is the titanium receiver on some models, along with a carbon fibre barrel. Mark V truly is an extension of the shooter that can withstand enormous amounts of pressure.

Our Recommendations for Mounts

Fixed Mounts

One of the most suitable fixed mounts would be the Leupold BackCountry rings, as they are placed in the perfect price range for this Weatherby Mark V Standard rifle.

Detachable Repeatable Mounts

This MAKlassic 2-piece pivot mount, made from steel, is a suitable fit for this rifle.

Picatinny Rail

There are two suitable Picatinny rails for this rifle, this one from Warne, and another one from EGW. The latter is more popular, but it is made from aluminium, whereas the Warne one is made from steel.
