The History of McMillan

The story of McMillan Firearms began in the late 1960s when Gale McMillan, the grandfather of Ryan McMillan, invented the fiberglass stock. This innovative manufacturing process for rifle stocks learned during Gale's time at Motorola is still utilized in the industry after more than 50 years. Recognizing the potential for improvement in this area, Ryan McMillan, Gale's grandson, started Grayboe company in 2016 with a clear mission in mind - to make the production of top-notch, epoxy-based rifle stocks quicker and more cost-effective. This was an idea that had been buzzing around since the days of McMillan Fiberglass Stocks. Tapping into the rich McMillan family heritage, Grayboe rolled up its sleeves and dove headfirst into thorough research and development. Today, Grayboe is a strong contender in the rifle stock market, continuing to uphold the McMillan family name.

McMillan Gunworks, however, was founded by Gale McMillan in the late 1970s and has been a well-known name in precision rifle manufacturing, particularly for military and law enforcement applications. Ryan McMillan then co-founded McMillan Firearms in 2007 to carry on the legacy. The company, based in Phoenix, Arizona, made a name for itself with its remarkable line of firearms, particularly the McMillan Tac-50, a .50 BMG long-range anti-materiel and sniper rifle. Other products include the McMillan Tac-338, Tac-300, Tac-308 sniper rifles, and the ALIAS Rifle System.

In 2013, McMillan Firearms was sold to Strategic Armory Corps, a move that significantly expanded its hunting and tactical division. Strategic Armory Corps was founded in 2011 with a focus on customer-centric design and structure. After acquiring McMillan Firearms, it was able to leverage a broad range of technology and experience, resulting in improved product development, customer service, and commitment to manufacturing quality products.

Presently, McMillan Firearms continues to offer a comprehensive range of premium hunting rifles under the Custom Collection, as well as the TAC and ALIAS series, offering innovative designs in various configurations.

McMillan G30 LA Rifle Review

The McMillan G30 LA is a bolt action rifle featuring a custom G30 action base on the design of Remington 700 and made from steel. The action is CNC precision machined, with general tolerances held to 0.13 mm, while critical components are machined to 0.013 mm. The bolt is made from hardened steel and has spiral grooves for smooth operation in hostile environments.

The G30 actions, although developed by McMillan, are based on the design of the Remington 700 and are available in two action lengths: short action and long action. This implies that one-piece, as well as two-piece scope mounts suitable for Remington 700 LA and SA, will be interchangeable with McMillan G30 LA and SA actions. On this landing page, the long action version of the action is introduced.

The bolt lugs are hand-lapped to the receiver, ensuring equal force and square contact, and the extractor is a large Sako-style claw, also designed by McMillan. Moreover, the G30 employs dual ejectors: a Remington-type plunger and a secondary spring-loaded mechanical ejector. Most rifles come with a removable five-round box magazine, which is housed in a Badger Ordnance trigger housing, however, some versions are available with the hinged floorplate. The safety mechanism comes in a form of a two-position lever, placed on the upper right side of the receiver behind the bolt handle and follows a simple back (safe) and forward (fire) operation. The bolt release lever is positioned on the opposite, left side of the receiver.

The trigger mechanism is reminiscent of Remington and can be adjusted for the weight of the pull.

Stocks are either made from a polymer material or wood, with the A3-5 type, offering adjustability for cheek rest height and length of pull. All models feature a rubber recoil pad at the rear end of the stock.

Pivot mounts are a special kind of repeatable mounts that are especially popular in Europe and mainly produced by European manufacturers. Most notable among them are German Companies like EAW (Ernst Apel Wurzburg), Recknagel, Henneberger and MAK. These Companies were also among the first to produce mounts of this type. Non German companies like Rusan are also following this trend.

Main benefits of pivot mounts, or swing mounts as they are sometimes called are:

  • 100% repeatability,
  • very quick and easy detaching and reattaching,
  • extremely durable; most mounts of this kind are tested on 10000 or more reattachments,
  • size and weight; light and small, elegant.

There are also some minor weaknesses that such mounts posses and they are: they are usually more expensive than other types of mounts, the installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith and most of these mounts are higher than 14 mm.

A distinct feature of pivot/swing mounts is the way the scope attaches to the rifle. The front foot of the mount on the scope is inserted in the front base under a 90 degrees angle to the barrel. Then the entire scope is pivoted around the front base until it is locked into position by the rear base.

Pivot mounts of all types enable windage correction on the rear base at the time of the mounts installation. There are three main types of pivot mounts which are distinguished by the type of the rear base:

  • EAW style rear base: produced by EAW and Rusan,
  • Dovetail rail base: produced by Recknagel, Henneberger, MAK and others.
  • Leupold type rear base
