HS Precision LA

The History of HS Precision

The history of the HS Precision brand began in 1978. After working in the chemical industry in New York, Tom Houghton Sr. transitioned to the weapons sector. Together with his wife, they founded HS Precision as a small family business. Initially, the business was located in Arizona, but it relocated to Rapid City in the 1990s.

Historically, Tom Sr. was recognized for his innovative idea of integrating an aluminum bedding block into a fully synthetic rifle stock, which marked an important shift in firearm stock design globally. As the first company to do such a thing, HS quickly gained government contracts and has partnered with numerous renowned brands such as Savage and Remington. Soon after, they started with the production of their own rifles as well, although they never converted fully to mass production. They introduced models such as SPL, PLC, PHR, STR and PRO-Series, offering two action lengths.

Even today, the HS Precision uses their Pro-Series stainless steel action, an aluminum bedding block composite stock, a fully adjustable trigger, a stainless steel 10-x cut rifled barrel, and their own detachable magazine feeding system in all of their rifles. Ever since they first started production, the company has engineered and also manufactured every component in their factory which is located in the USA. Since moving to South Dakota, they've increased the size of their production facilities by nearly five times. As of 2023, the company is led by Tom’s son Tim Houghton, daughter Tricia and Tom’s wife Vivian. Along with stocks, premium rifles and barrel blanks, they also offer ballistic test equipment, detachable magazines and various accessories on their website.

HS Precision LA Rifle Review

The South Dakota-based company HS Precision produces a variety of rifles with both long action (LA) and short action (SA) designs. The data in this review refers to the long action (LA) version of the HS Precision. If you are looking for more information on the scope mounts suitable for short action HS Precision, you can read more about it here.

The Remington 700-style action, which they produce in-house, serves as the foundation for the design of their rifles. Their rifles come with an aluminum bedding block composite stock and a Pro-Series stainless steel action. The stainless steel 10-x cut rifled barrel, detachable magazine feeding system, and fully adjustable trigger are all made at their South Dakota plant. Due to identical hole spacings on the receiver, the Remington-style actions enable the interchangeability of the scope mounts on HS Precision's LA models. Two large forward locking lugs are incorporated into the bolt design, ensuring a solid lock-up with the action housing.

The standard safety lever, which is found on the back of the receiver stops unintentional discharges by blocking the bolt and trigger. Pulling the bolt handle up and backward and then activating the bolt stop release removes the bolt assembly. Additionally, there is a lever on the front of the trigger guard that makes it simple to remove the magazine. 3- or 5-round magazines with optional extension magazines and modification kits are the standard options.
