The History of Steyr

The story of Steyr Mannlicher began in 1821 when Leopold Werndl, a blacksmith, started manufacturing iron parts for firearms in the city of Steyr. His son Josef Werndl took over his business and founded the 'Josef und Franz Werndl & Comp. Waffenfabrik und Sägemühle in Oberletten ' in 1864. In the following years, he played a crucial role in the development of several rifles, including the straight pull-rifles M. 85 and M. 86. At the beginning of the 20th century, the engineers Ferdinand Mannlicher and Otto Schönauer developed the Original Mannlicher Schönauer, a legendary hunting rifle, the production of which took place until 1973. The company grew over the years and reached a production capability of 4.000 firearms per day before World War I. After the War, Steyr was prohibited from firearm manufacturing after the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye was signed. To avoid going bankrupt, they used their knowledge and machinery to manufacture cars, bicycles, motorcycles, tractors, trucks, dynamos, electric motors, and other things (they were not allowed to resume firearm production until 1930). In 1926, the company’s name was changed to Steyr-Werke AG. It merged with Austro-Daimler-Puchwerke AG in 1934 to form Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. Both Austro-Daimler (previously a subsidiary of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft) and Puch (founded by the Slovenian inventor and mechanic Janez Puh) were active in the automobile industry, with Puch also manufacturing bicycles, motorcycles, and mopeds.

They even employed Ferdinand Porsche for a time – he made several contributions to the company – one of them was designing an air-cooled 3.5 L V8 engine for the Steyr RSO Raupenschlepper Ost tracked vehicle. Steyr is known for modifying Fiat cars and adding their engines to some of the models (Steyr-Fiat 1100 Mod E and Fiat 1400, for example). In 1972, they cooperated with Mercedes in the design of Puch G, also known as Mercedes Benz G-class.

During World War II, the company focused on firearm, vehicle, aviation engine, and ball-bearing production for the German military. After a short firearm manufacturing ban after the end of the War, Steyr resumed the production of arms in 1950. In the years that followed, they presented many innovative firearms such as StG 77 (also known as Steyr AUG), an assault rifle with a bullpup design; SSG 69, which was ahead of its time after its release in 1969, and many others. In 1989, Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG broke up into different sectors; Steyr Mannlicher AG became independent. The company has strived to be internationally oriented, so it changed its name to Steyr Arms in 2019.

Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum (Picatinny) Rifle Review

Shortly after Steyr ended the production of their Luxus L/M/S models in 1996, they presented the new series Luxus which remained in production until around 2020. The rifle was completely refurbished and designed to be as user-friendly as possible. It is available in the Standard and Magnum version, each chambered for its caliber group. The user can choose between two different kinds of mounting surfacesa Picatinny rail or a swing mount rail. If you happen to own Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum with swing mount rail, you can see our landing page on this rifle here.

Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum is a modular bolt action rifle allowing the user to change the components and re-chamber the rifle at home quickly using some basic tools. There is a single screw at the lower end of the forearm that holds the receiver to the chamber and barrel. Once unscrewed, the barrel and forearm can be removed with ease. One feature which adds to the practicality of the modular design is that either of the scope-mounting surfaces stays permanently mounted on the barrel, which allows for retaining zero of the scope.

The aluminum alloy receiver is anodized, and the rifle comes with a twisted barrel profile. Contrary to the older Luxus models which featured a rear locking mechanism, the Luxus Magnum uses six front locking lugs that lock up directly into the barrel. The bolt comes at a lift angle of 70°, has a cocking indicator placed on the rear side, and gas ports along its length. The single-set trigger is adjustable for trigger pressure by turning a small screw positioned on the lower side of the trigger. However, like most other components on Luxus Magnum, the trigger assembly can also be swapped for another one.

There is a three-position rotary safety at the back of the receiver with a white dot indicator blocking the trigger but allowing the bolt to be removed, and the grey tab indicator that locks both – the bolt and the trigger. The detachable single-column magazine holds three or four rounds and can be removed by pressing two buttons on each side simultaneously. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with screw adjustable front and rear sights

Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum Calibers

Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum is chambered for the following calibers:

  • .270 WSM

  • 7mm Rem. Mag.

  • .300 WSM

  • .300 Win. Mag.

  • 8x68 S

  • .375 H&H Mag.

One of the possible scope mounting surfaces for Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Magnum is the Picatinny rail which is mounted on the barrel with two screws. When the rifle is taken apart, the scope mount stays permanently attached to the barrel which allows for the scope to retain its zero.

General description

Most reflex red dot sights are of the open type, meaning that the light-emitting diode (LED) and the interior of the objective lens are exposed to the elements. Only a few red dot sights in this category have these two parts sealed (Steiner MRS, Holosun 512, etc.)

The objective lens is curved so that the beam emitted by the LED can reflect the user's eye in front of the device regardless of its position. The coatings applied to the lens reflect only the colour of the emitted beam, all the other colours pass through the lens. The most common colour is, of course, red. Nevertheless, some companies have started manufacturing green and gold dot sight because many people have problems seeing the red colour.

Reflex dot sight is parallax free. The majority of them are small and compact (some reflex dot sights designed for AR-platforms are bigger and bulkier). There are all sorts of mounting footprints when it comes to this category. The most popular is Docter/Noblex footprint profile. More information about the footprints on the red dot sight is available here.

Handgun reflex sights

These red dot sights must be small and compact so that they fit on a handgun. Pistol users generally prefer bigger dot projections (6 MOA –7 MOA) as it allows for quick target acquisition. These sights can also be used on rifles, but most rifle users opt for smaller dot projections (2 MOA –3.5 MOA). Handgun reflex sight withstands powerful recoil. Some modern pistols are designed so that a particular red dot sight footprint matches the mounting surface of the pistol perfectly (they are optic-ready).

Rifle reflex sights

Even though some reflex sights can be used on handguns and rifles, rifle-oriented reflex sight is generally bigger. They are equipped with a large objective lens and often supplied with a Picatinny mount.

Dot size

The dot size in reflex sight is associated with the field of use. Dot sizes 1 MOA –4 MOA are great for rifles as they provide more accuracy at distances up to 75 m. Dot sizes 4 MOA–10 MOA are a perfect choice for pistols since they allow the shooter to acquire the target faster. They provide sufficient accuracy at a distance of up to 40 m.

What is a reflex sight good for?

All dot sights operate at around 1x magnification. For this reason, the user can look through with both eyes open which add to the comfort and simplicity of use. Even though the shooter is looking through the lens, he or she remains aware of the surroundings (the peripheral vision is not affected). Reflex sight boasts unlimited eye relief and unlimited eye box (the dot is always on target as long as you see it, regardless of the eye position, allowing for quick target acquisition. In comparison to tube dot sight, reflex dot sight generally provides a less obstructed field of view (the frame around the lens is thinner).

What is the difference between a reflex sight and a red dot?

Every reflex sight is a red dot (or a green dot, or a gold dot, depends on the colour of the emitted beam) – reflex sight is a subcategory of a red dot. Most people, however, think about tube sight when they hear the term 'red dot'.

The differences between reflex sights and tube sights

  • Tube sight has enclosed housings, reflex sight is typical of the open type (even though there are some exceptions).
  • The frame around the objective lens is thicker with tube sight.
  • The reflex sight is typically smaller and lighter (even though there are some exceptions, for example, Holosun 512 models).
  • Tube sight comes almost exclusively with a round-shaped lens whereas reflex sight mostly comes with a rectangular-shaped lens.
  • Tube sight is not used on pistols as they are too big.
  • Tube sight is more suitable for harsh weather conditions (with the reflex sight of the open type, water, dust, or other particles can get in between the diode and the lens).

At what distances are reflex sights still accurate?

That depends on the dot size. Reflex sight designed for rifle use (1 MOA –4 MOA dot size) provides considerable accuracy up to 75 m.

Reflex sight designed for pistol use (4 MOA –10 MOA dot size) is accurate at up to 40 m. The accuracy is increased if the dot is paired with a magnifier.
