The History of Husqvarna

The history of Husqvarna dates back to the year 1689 when drilling operations were established beside the waterfalls in the town of Huskvarna, southern Sweden. Originally, the Jönköping Rifle Factory manufactured around 1500 musket pipes annually. As Sweden began to build its army, an additional complex was established to increase production capabilities. In the 1800s, the company was transferred to private ownership and moved its weaponry production to the Huskvarna location. After a decrease in military demand following the Danish-Prussian War in 1864 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Husqvarna shifted its production towards shotguns and break-action hunting rifles.

In the following century, due to the constantly changing demand for weapons on the market, the company diversified its skills and started manufacturing various other products. These included sewing machines, wood stoves, bicycles, and early gas stoves. In 1895, Husqvarna even developed the first Swedish-made typewriter. At the height of the Industrial Revolution, Husqvarna began focusing more on complex machinery and by the early 1900s, it has introduced its first lawnmowers and motorcycles.

During World War II, Husqvarna Vapenfabrik manufactured approximately 18,000 pieces of m/98-based rifles for civilian marksmanship training. From approximately 1927 to 1942, the company produced medium-caliber bolt-action rifles based on the same mechanism used in the Swedish Army's Mauser m/96. Beginning in early 1939, Husqvarna began sourcing Mauser M98 actions from the Belgian firm FN, branding the resulting rifles as Model 146, 246, and 640.

The company introduced its first independent action, the 1600 series, in 1953. Numerous other models were introduced in the following years, including the HVA, the 8000, and the famous 1900 model. In the late 1960s, Husqvarna decided to stop producing break-action firearms and sold its rifle production and military contracts to Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori in Eskilstuna. The official production of firearms ceased in 1972, although an army order for the Ak 4 provided Husqvarna with the funds needed to revamp their workshop and extend the production of the 1900 bolt-action rifle into the 1980s.

In 1987, Husqvarna sold off its motorcycle division to KTM. Meanwhile, the production of other goods prevailed and kept the company going until today. As of 2023, Husqvarna Group is best known for its manufacturing of outdoor power products and construction equipment such as robotic lawnmowers and chainsaws.

Husqvarna 1900 Rifle Review

The Husqvarna 1900 is a bolt-action rifle introduced in Sweden by Husqvarna Vapenfabrik in the 1960s, later known as the Carl Gustaf 1900 model. This rifle was initially produced from 1967 until 1970. However, when the rifle production department was sold to FFV, manufacturing was relocated to Carl Gustaf’s production facilities in Eskilstuna. Here, the production of the rifle continued until 1979.

The 1900 model was produced in several variants, with differences lying in minor details like the stock shape and checkering. The receiver is made of durable steel, that houses a bolt with two large locking lugs and a Sako-style extractor. There are four different lengths of bolt travel depending on the caliber, however, the action was only made in one length. As a result, the bolt travel and magazine were adjusted to the length of the cartridge. Four drilled and tapped holes on the top of the receiver can be used for scope mounting purposes.

Equipped with a single-stage trigger, the rifle also came with a set-trigger option available. The safety comes in a form of a lever that blocks the trigger and the bolt, positioned on the right upper side of the receiver and easily reachable with a thumb. The Husqvarna 1900 includes a hooded sight at the front and a flip-down adjustable sight at the rear end of the barrel.

The rifle features an internal, hinged floorplate magazine that can hold up to five cartridges. There are several copies and variations of the 1900 model, like the Antonio Zoli 1900 or Viking Arms 1900, that can be found on the market. These models are based on the original Husqvarna action design, with Antonio Zoli even purchasing the rights to the design in later years to continue the production of the 1900 model.
