Benelli R1

About the Benelli

Benelli brothers, owners of the Benelli motorcycle company, embarked on a new journey when they formed Benelli Armi S.p.A. company in 1967. The brothers were passionate hunters as well as fine engineers and with the help of Bruno Civolani, they developed an extraordinary hunting shotgun that used a simple inertia driven mechanism in place of a conventional gas-operated system. This mechanism turned out to be a revolutionary design, as it permitted the user to fire 5 rounds in less than a second, making it the fastest reloading action the world had ever seen. The company was acquired by the Beretta company in 1983. In 2002 they entered the rifle market which demanded the highest levels of mechanical precision and reliability. By the year 2007, 40 years after the company founding, they have already sold more than 2 million shotguns.

Benelli R1 Rifle Review

Benelli R1 is a big-game rifle built around the patented, battle-tested auto-regulation gas-operated (A.R.G.O.) piston-driven system used in their M4 military shotgun of the Super 90 series of shotguns, in contrast to other 3 shotguns in the Super 90 series (M1, M2, M3), which are based on the Inertia Driven System. Because of its reliability and nearly 50% lower recoil compared to other rifles, this rifle is in use by the US Marine Corps. This system with reduced recoil helps tame the “flinch factor” when shooting large-calibre rounds.

The rifle comes in 2 versions: Pro Big Game Rifle and Big Game Rifle

The Pro Big Game Rifle comes in .30-06 Spr. ammunition and AA-Grade Satin Walnut variant, whereas Big Game Rifle comes in .30-06 Spr., .338 Lapua Mag., .300 Win. Mag. and .308 Win. along with Black Synthetic and AA-Grade Satin Walnut variants.

Mounts are meant to be installed on 4 mounting holes, which Benelli R1 already has drilled and tapped. They are placed in a horizontal line, in 2 pairs, 2 holes at the front and 2 holes at the rear.

Which rifles have interchangeable mounts with Benelli R1?

  • Benelli Argo
  • Browning BAR, Acera, Maral
  • Winchester SXR Vulcan
  • Fabarm Iris

Therefore, if a mount is named for one of them, it will fit all others as well, because their mounting surfaces are identical.

Our recommendation for mounts

Fixed mounts:

One of the few mounts available for Benelli R1 are these MAKfix rings. These mounts have ARGO in the name, but Benelli ARGO and Benelli R1 have the same mounting surface, so the mounts will also fit R1.

Detachable repeatable mounts:

A lot of detachable repeatable mounts are available for this rifle. If we would have to pick one out, it would be ERAMATIC pivot mount, because it will serve its purpose well. It is named for Benelli ARGO, but it will fit R1 too, because of the identical mounting surface.

Picatinny rails:

Many suitable Picatinny rails are available for this rifle. Contessa Picatinny rail is a bit more expensive than some others, but it is made of steel, compared to the cheaper ones, which are made of aluminium. The rail is designed for the Benelli Argo rifle, but it will also fit R1. Due to the physical properties of the materials of the Picatinny rail and the rifle action, it is important that the material matches. More about that in our article here

Help us build our riflescope mounts database

If you happen to own this or any other rifle, we would appreciate it if you could help us expand our database by sending us some photos of the rifle receiver (the bare mounting surface of the rifle without the mounts installed). For your help, our company offers a fair return in terms of practical rewards.
