The History of Dumoulin Herstal SA

Dumoulin Herstal SA is a gun-making company located in Herstal, Belgium. They make hunting weapons and sporting guns. The company is known for mixing classic crafting methods with the newest high-precision machining technology. They offer Mauser-style actions, Express rifles, and various shotgun models. Customers can also ask for special designs or changes to their firearms according to their personal preferences. Dumoulin Herstal SA employs skilled artists to engrave intricate designs on their weapons.

The company is part of a bigger group called Groupe Herstal S.A. Way back in 1888, the Herstal group started by making rifles for the Belgian Army. By the 1890s, they were also selling guns to the end customers and expanded their offer to various civilian firearms. They teamed up with a famous gun designer, John Moses Browning, and together they produced some of the groundbreaking designs, including the first automatic handgun. Because of this partnership, the Browning brand became a part of FN Herstal's product line from 1907 onwards.

World Wars brought challenges for FN Herstal. During both wars, their operations were disrupted due to invasions and conflicts. After World War II, they expanded their range to include jet engines and later tried their hand at sports goods like surfboards and tennis rackets. However, the core of their business remained weapons.

During the 1980s, they faced financial struggles due to a weak defence market, so they sold non-gun businesses, focused on firearms, and bought the US Repeating Arms Co. in 1987. The company was sold to GIAT in 1990. Seven years later, the Walloon government acquired and renamed it Groupe Herstal. Not long after, they introduced a "smart gun" prototype.

Nowadays the Dumoulin is under the Herstal Group umbrella which encompasses two main divisions: FN Herstal for Defense and Security, and the Browning and Winchester brands for hunting and sports shooting, offering a wide range of firearms, ammo, and related gear globally.

Dumoulin Herstal Mauser Action Review

Dumoulin offers several base models of firearms that are built on their version of Mauser-style action such as Mousqueton, Herstal Safari, White Hunter or Diane. The actions are made of durable forged A-2 type steel and house a single-piece bolt with a claw-type extractor and strong dual-locking lugs. The bolt diameter primarily accepts cartridges for the .30-06 Spr. family but can be modified for other rounds. Dumoulin is famous for their trigger which is fully adjustable for sear engagement, over travel and creep. Both the trigger guard that is connected to a Ruger-style floorplate and the trigger itself are machined from steel.

The custom-designed bolt sleeve follows the FN style and features a three-position side-swing safety in the Winchester fashion. It blocks the bolt and prevents the trigger from being pulled. The steel floorplate covers an internal magazine that is a part of the action and can hold up to 5 rounds.

Despite being a Mauser-style action, the upper surface of the receiver is not the same as it is flat with threaded holes and differs from the one commonly found on other Mauser-style actions. The flat surface is drilled for 6-48 screws and the front, and the back end are the same height, meaning that the BHU is 0 mm.
