The History of Barnard

Barnard Precision is a New Zealand-based company that specializes in the manufacturing of high-precision actions and custom rifles for a variety of purposes. The company was founded in the 1980s by Peter Barnard and has since established a reputation for producing high-quality products.

The company offers different types of custom rifles for a wide range of applications, including Custom Tactical, F class, and Hunting, all of which are based on their own actions. Additionally, the company produces many different accessories, such as V bedding blocks, scope rails, central sight blocks, action wrenches, target triggers, and bipods.

The company's area of specialization lies in manufacturing platforms specifically designed for target shooting. Barnard adopted a method of producing Remington 700-style based actions, which have been widely recognized as some of the best actions in the industry. For their rifles, they use Dolphin Modular, Joe West Laminate, locally made F-Class and Hunting stocks. Their most famous action is the "S" model, which is based on the popular Remington 700 SA (Short Action) model.

Although the company seems to still be active in 2023, they have been somewhat less present on the market and have mostly stopped posting on their social media. This is likely due to the tighter law controls that have been implemented around the world and in New Zealand lately, which have made it more difficult for gun manufacturers to market their products. Despite the tight law controls that exist in many countries, Barnard Precision continues to innovate and develop new products, all while maintaining their commitment to precision and quality.

Barnard Precision P Action Review

Barnard Precision P actions are single-shot cylindrical actions available in various configurations and are highly regarded by competitive long-range prone shooters, such as Palma team competitors and NRA Prone Shooters.

The P models feature blued, hand-lapped finishes and come with the Barnard 2-stage target trigger. The bolt is equipped with three forward locking lugs and a Sako-style extractor, providing reliable and smooth cycling. The loading port is 75 mm in length, accommodating easy loading and unloading. They can be built around the Anschutz standard Round-shaped 11 mm Dovetail or drilled and tapped with four holes (M4) on the rifle's receiver for mounting purposes. This feature enables shooters to select the best configuration for their specific needs.

The precision P actions are chambered for various calibers and can be upgraded with an ejector plunger. Barnard Precision rifles manufactured on the P action platform include the Model 10SS, TR Rifle (Anschutz 11 mm Dovetail), Joe West FTR Rifle, Dolphin FTR Rifle, NB F-Class Rifle, Dolphin F-Class Rifle, and Joe West F-Class Rifle.

There are multiple ways to manage recoil with the Model P, including using a Remington-style lug positioned between the barrel and receiver, installing a recoil lug into a slot on the bottom of the receiver, or utilizing a recoil spigot attached to the action that fits into a steel-bushed hole in a bedding block made of 6061 aluminum. The bedding block has been specifically machined to create two parallel points of contact on the action.
