Anschutz 1771

The History of Anschutz

On the first of July in 1856, the son of the master gunsmith Johann Heinrich Gottlieb Anschütz, Julius Gottfried Anschütz founded the company J.G. ANSCHÜTZ in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia. Forty years later, they relocated from the small workshop to their first factory with 76 employees. The founder of the J.G. ANSCHÜTZ company passed away in 1901. His sons Fritz and Otto took over their father's work. The latter died in 1923. The company was continued by Fritz August Anschütz supported by his two sons Max Fritz and Rudolf Charles Anschütz, the third ANSCHÜTZ generation. The factory was closed down and then destroyed and seized after the war.

1950 was the year of a fresh start in the Danube Bastion in Ulm where the company J.G. ANSCHÜTZ GmbH was founded. 7 people and 20 machines initially handled air pistols and gun repairs; afterward, Flobert rifles (rimfire rifles) and Match rifles were added. After the first sport shooting success, further successes came one after the other. Max Schmeling, a former boxing champion, also competed for Germany on the clay pigeon shooting national team. He was familiar with ANSCHÜTZ rifles because he was a target shooter and a hunter. He purchased some of them in Ulm and even suggested a change in the company's logo.

Dieter Anschütz, a member of the fourth generation, took over management in 1968 and proved himself as a good leader. The catchphrase "DIE MEISTER MACHER" was born out of the achievements of the ANSCHÜTZ target actions across the globe. It still holds true today. As managing director since 1992, Jochen Anschütz continues to administer the company with the aid of his son.

Anschutz 1771 Rifle Review

Anschutz 1771 is a centerfire bolt-action rifle derived from Anschutz 1781, made for short-action. It can be used for both, hunting and sport shooting, as it is incredibly precise.

Its push-feed steel action consists of a robust bolt with two rows of three locking lugs and an adjustable trigger that comes preset at 1200 g (2.64 lbs) but can be adjusted from 1000 to 2000 g (2.2 to 4.4 lbs). The rifle gets cocked by opening the bolt, which moves smoothly and opens at a sixty-degree angle.  The pull length equals 363 mm (14.3-inches). A two-position safety is attached to the rear right of the action in form of a catch. The extractor grabs the case of a cartridge extremely firmly thanks to the flawless mechanism behind it. Mounting scopes onto the rifle is simple as it comes equipped with a Picatinny rail, giving the buyer plenty of options.

The rifle's default barrel is 520 mm (20.5-inches) long, while its overall length is 1029 mm (40.5-inches). Its detachable magazine has a capacity of 4+1 cartridges.

Riflescopes magnify images, allowing the shooter to carefully inspect the target, while a red dot sight quick target acquisition when shooting at short distances.

In this category, there are mounts that allow the use of a riflescope and a red dot sight in a single setup.

Advantages of combined use of two optical devices

  1. The hunter is prepared to take an accurate shot in all possible situations.

  2. At close range, a red dot sight is used, while the riflescope proves useful at long-range distances.

  3. Using a red dot and a riflescope in a single setup is less expensive than purchasing two, 100% repeatable mounting solutions for each optical device.

Most mounts found in this category are either rings or parts of rings with an integrated red dot sight mounting standard. The standard is specified in the mount’s name – mostly, one of the familiar red dot mounting standards is listed such as Docter Sight, Aimpoint Micro, C-more RTS, Shield RMS/SMS, Trijicon RMR.

Some manufacturers, such as Spuhr and Recknagel, provide rings with an interface that is then further paired with an adapter plate.

How to mount a red dot sight on a riflescope

There are two ways of mounting a red dot sight on a scope tube:

  1. on top of the riflescope or

  2. on the side, at a 45° angle.

Even though the mounting style depends on the user preference, having a red dot sight mounted on top of a riflescope is generally more popular among hunters.

IPSC shooters, for example, generally prefer to have the red dot sight mounted at a 45° angle.

Red dot mounts for a scope tube are almost exclusively made from aluminium.
