Accuracy International AT308

The History of Accuracy International

Accuracy International was founded in the UK in 1978 by Malcolm Cooper, a British Olympic medalist in shooting, and Sarah Cooper, his wife. The company was established with the aim of creating a high-precision rifle that would meet the needs of competitive target shooters and military snipers alike. In 1982, they introduced their first rifle, the AI Arctic Warfare rifle. The rifle's accuracy and reliability made it a favorite of military and law enforcement agencies around the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, AI continued to refine and expand its product line, developing new models like the AW50 and the AWM (Arctic Warfare Magnum). These rifles were designed to meet the needs of different users, from military snipers to police SWAT teams.

In the early 2000s, AI secured a contract to supply rifles to the British Armed Forces, cementing its reputation as a supplier of high-quality military equipment. The company's rifles were used by British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they earned a reputation for their accuracy and reliability. AI continued to expand its product line, offering rifles for civilian use, as well as law enforcement and military applications. Today, AI is known for its commitment to precision, quality, and reliability, and its rifles are widely used by military and law enforcement agencies around the world.

The company has always been focused on developing new technologies and refining existing ones to create rifles that are even more accurate, reliable, and durable. This commitment to innovation has led to the development of advanced features like detachable magazines, adjustable stocks, and precision triggers. AI has also developed proprietary technologies, such as the Quickloc barrel system, which allows users to quickly change barrels on their rifles. The company remains a small, independent company that is owned and operated by the Cooper family, who continue to oversee every aspect of the company's operations.

Accuracy International AT308 Rifle Review

The Accuracy International AT308 is a bolt-action precision rifle designed for the short-action .308 Winchester cartridge and a successor of the AW308 model. The rifle is equipped with a proofed steel push-feed action that is bonded and bolted to an aluminum chassis. The action features AI's Quickloc - quick release barrel system, which makes it easy to change the barrel if necessary.

The rifle's 20 MOA STANAG 4694 / Mil Std 1913 receiver and forend rail provide the necessary versatility to mount various accessories such as scopes, bipods, and other equipment. The AT308's bolt is a six-locking-lug, 60-degree opening angle design with AI's combat-proven leaf spring extractor. The rifle also includes a 3-position safety that is easy to operate and helps ensure safe handling in all conditions. The two-stage trigger is adjustable for trigger weight between 1500 and 2000 g (3.3 and 4.4 lbs), which allows for precise control of the rifle.

The rifle features a detachable 10-round double-stack magazine. Additionally, it can be loaded through the ejection port. The AT308 weighs 5800g when unloaded and equipped with a 610 mm (24 inch) barrel, which is optimal for long-range accuracy.

Riflescopes magnify images, allowing the shooter to carefully inspect the target, while a red dot sight quick target acquisition when shooting at short distances.

In this category, there are mounts that allow the use of a riflescope and a red dot sight in a single setup.

Advantages of combined use of two optical devices

  1. The hunter is prepared to take an accurate shot in all possible situations.

  2. At close range, a red dot sight is used, while the riflescope proves useful at long-range distances.

  3. Using a red dot and a riflescope in a single setup is less expensive than purchasing two, 100% repeatable mounting solutions for each optical device.

Most mounts found in this category are either rings or parts of rings with an integrated red dot sight mounting standard. The standard is specified in the mount’s name – mostly, one of the familiar red dot mounting standards is listed such as Docter Sight, Aimpoint Micro, C-more RTS, Shield RMS/SMS, Trijicon RMR.

Some manufacturers, such as Spuhr and Recknagel, provide rings with an interface that is then further paired with an adapter plate.

How to mount a red dot sight on a riflescope

There are two ways of mounting a red dot sight on a scope tube:

  1. on top of the riflescope or

  2. on the side, at a 45° angle.

Even though the mounting style depends on the user preference, having a red dot sight mounted on top of a riflescope is generally more popular among hunters.

IPSC shooters, for example, generally prefer to have the red dot sight mounted at a 45° angle.

Red dot mounts for a scope tube are almost exclusively made from aluminium.
