The History of Sturm, Ruger & Co.

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc., more commonly known as Ruger, is an American firearm manufacturing company headquartered in Southport, Connecticut. Founded in 1949 by Alexander McCormick Sturm and William B. Ruger in a rented machine shop in Connecticut, the company has since become one of the largest firearm manufacturers in the world - shadowed only by Remington and perhaps Smith & Wesson.

Ruger is widely recognized for producing firearms that span a broad spectrum of uses such as bolt-action rifles and pistols, semi-automatic rifles, single-shot rifles, shotguns, and revolvers. As recognition of its quality products grew so did the public’s interest in investing in the company’s shares. Ruger went public in 1969 and grew exponentially since then, and it is on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:RGR) since 1990.

In 2020, Ruger made another big move with their acquisition of Marlin Firearms from Remington Outdoor Company.

For decades now both newbie and seasoned shooters have been consistently trusting Ruger’s guns for their excellent accuracy and superior long-term performance as evidenced by its continued success over all these years.

Today, Ruger’s most popular products include the Ruger 10/22 semiautomatic rifle, the .22 rimfire semi-automatic pistol Ruger MK IV, the bolt-action Ruger American rifle, the tried and tested Ruger No.1, and, of course, the timeless Ruger Security-Six revolvers.

In 2007, Ruger decided to retire the Ruger Police Carbine which was intended to be used together with Ruger semi-auto pistols by law enforcement. In 2017, however, Ruger went back to the drawing board and decided to reintroduce an improved and upgraded takedown version, and so the Ruger PC Carbine was born.

The Ruger PC Carbine is a robust blowback semi-auto carbine designed for pistol calibers. Unlike its predecessor, it doesn’t just take the Ruger pistol magazines, but instead also accepts some of the most popular Glock magazines. It comes ready for Ruger mags out of the box, but an additional Glock magazine well is also supplied and can be easily installed if needed.

It is fitted with a sturdy synthetic stock made from dense nylon. Visually, the gun embraces a classic law enforcement style with its sharp black synthetic finish.

Comfort hasn't been overlooked, either. The Carbine includes a soft rubber buttpad and comes with three extra spacers. This gives you some wiggle room to adjust the length of the stock and find that perfect fit.

The 410 mm barrel is cold-hammer-forged and is made of chrome-moly steel. A standout feature is the easy takedown system. It allows for quick separation of the barrel/forend assembly from the action. You just lock the bolt back, ensure the rifle is unloaded, push the recessed lever, twist the components in opposite directions, and voila - the weapon is taken apart. As an added bonus, some models made after 2019 also come with a free-floating M-LOK handguard.

With a trigger akin to the one on the Ruger 10/22, the PC Carbine offers a light and crisp pull for accurate shooting. The cross-bolt safety is conveniently located at the front of the trigger guard. This is a departure from the Police Carbine, where the safety was positioned at the rear of the guard.

Another departure from the Police Carbine, and a more significant one, is found on the receiver. PC Carbine's receiver is CNC-machined from a top-grade aluminum billet and comes with an integrated Picatinny rail. The old Ruger Police Carbine, on the other hand, was made with Ruger-style scope bases directly machined into the receiver. In that regard, the new PC Carbine is absolutely superior.

Strictly speaking, there is only one Ruger PC Carbine variant available with many subvariants that all have slight modifications that set them apart from the base model.

Ruger usually names rifle variants by either a model number or a certain distributor that secured special rights for exclusive distribution of a specific variant, such as Ruger PC Carbine Talo Distributor Exclusive, for instance.

The differences are usually only of aesthetic nature and don’t affect the overall feel or experience of the weapon. The models offered are also constantly updated, except for the base model which always stays the same.
