The History of Barnard

Barnard Precision is a New Zealand-based company that specializes in the manufacturing of high-precision actions and custom rifles for a variety of purposes. The company was founded in the 1980s by Peter Barnard and has since established a reputation for producing high-quality products.

The company offers different types of custom rifles for a wide range of applications, including Custom Tactical, F class, and Hunting, all of which are based on their own actions. Additionally, the company produces many different accessories, such as V bedding blocks, scope rails, central sight blocks, action wrenches, target triggers, and bipods.

The company's area of specialization lies in manufacturing platforms specifically designed for target shooting. Barnard adopted a method of producing Remington 700-style based actions, which have been widely recognized as some of the best actions in the industry. For their rifles, they use Dolphin Modular, Joe West Laminate, locally made F-Class and Hunting stocks. Their most famous action is the "S" model, which is based on the popular Remington 700 SA (Short Action) model.

Although the company seems to still be active in 2023, they have been somewhat less present on the market and have mostly stopped posting on their social media. This is likely due to the tighter law controls that have been implemented around the world and in New Zealand lately, which have made it more difficult for gun manufacturers to market their products. Despite the tight law controls that exist in many countries, Barnard Precision continues to innovate and develop new products, all while maintaining their commitment to precision and quality.

Barnard Precision S Action Review

Barnard Precision S action is a cylindrical Remington 700-type action with the same diameter receiver and mounting screw positions as the Remington 700 SA. Although it's compatible with Remington 700 stocks and triggers, the actions come with a 0 mm BHU, which differs from the BHU of 2.9 mm on the Remington 700 actions. Consequently, the scope mounts between them will not be interchangeable, contrary to popular belief. However, very little work is needed to have the action fit the various 700 stocks and triggers.

The Precision S action features the same bolt turn-down position as the Remington 700 SA; however, it comes with three hand-lapped locking lugs contrary to the Remington 700 SA which only comes with two. The precision S actions feature Sako type extractor and are available in the single-shot configuration only. Users can choose between right or left-hand configurations. Compared to the Precision P actions, the overall receiver length of Precision S is around 7 mm longer but the loading port is around 2 mm shorter.

The action is approximately 10 mm longer at the barrel end in comparison to the Remington 700 SA. Therefore, it's important to consider this difference when choosing a stock. The recoil options are either a recoil lug similar to those used with Remington or a 1/4" x 28mm cap screw that goes from the action into a steel-lined hole in an aluminum V bedding block. This provides a solid base for the action, enhancing the overall accuracy of the rifle.
