The History of Beretta

The Beretta company has a rich and storied history that dates back to the year 1526. It all began when Mastro Bartolomeo Beretta sold 185 harquebus barrels to the Venice Arsenal. The production of firearms has remained within the family to this day, making Beretta the oldest active firearms manufacturer in the world.

In the early 1800s, Pietro Antonio Beretta traveled throughout Italy to promote the quality of his products and secure new orders. Despite the challenges posed by foreign rule, he honed his skills in crafting barrels for smooth-bore shotguns and pistols. He eventually registered the company under the official name, Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta. By the end of the 17th century, Beretta had established itself as the second-largest manufacturer of gun barrels in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy.

In 1918, the Italian army adopted the use of the Beretta Model 1918, a groundbreaking submachine gun. During World War 2, the company was required to manufacture weapons for the Italian regime, even though its political views were predominantly liberal. However, some of the production was carried out secretly to supply the Partisans, which resulted in the German SS confiscating the company in 1943. The German forces even took Pietro Beretta, the head of the company, hostage. In response, the Partisans raided the Brescia town, successfully regaining control of the factory.

Following the War, Beretta altered the design of the M1 to create the Beretta BM-59 rifle, which resembled the M14 battle rifle. However, their production shifted towards firearms for the civilian market after the War. In the 1970s, Beretta entered into an agreement with the Brazilian government to produce firearms for the Brazilian Army. This collaboration lasted until 1980. In the 1980s, the Beretta 92 pistol was chosen to be the standard service handgun of the United States Army.

Although Beretta is primarily known for their semi-automatic pistols, such as the Model 1915M1923418M1934/M1935M1951, and 70 series, they have also manufactured a variety of other weapons including revolvers, submachine guns, grenade launchers, and rifles and carbines like the BM-59, 501 (sporting rifle), Rx4 StormCx4 Storm, and BRX1 straight-pull bolt-action rifle. In addition, Beretta has a long tradition of producing side-by-side shotguns, over-and-under shotguns and semi-automatic shotguns offered in various grades, with some of the popular models being the A400, A300Beretta 686DT10AL391 etc.

Beretta Holding is currently the parent company of several subsidiary firms, including Beretta USA, Benelli, Tikka, Stoeger, SAKO, Uberti, Franchi, and Burris Optics. Today in 2023, the company Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta, also known as Beretta S.p.A., is led by Franco Gussalli Beretta who serves as the President and CEO. The company has been owned by the same family for nearly five hundred years, a testament to its longevity and heritage. Its legacy has been passed down through generations, continuing to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of its customers.

Beretta Cx4 Storm Rifle Review

The Beretta Cx4 Storm is a blowback-operated polymer-framed carbine chambered in 9x19 mm and .40 S&W. Beretta recently discontinued production of the .45 ACP version. The rifle is fed through pistol magazines and has a twist barrel that is both hammer-forged and chrome lined.

The Cx4 Storm boasts a number of features designed for ambidextrous use, including a reversible extractor and ejector, safety, magazine release, cocking handle, and ejection port cover. The thumbhole stock can also be adjusted in length using spacers. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with multiple safety features, including a manual safety that blocks the trigger, a bolt travel stop safety, a firing pin block safety, and a hammer block/drop safety.

The trigger pull-weight on the Cx4 Storm is on the heavy side and comes from the factory preset. The front post sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation, and the rear sight is a straightforward "L-shaped" sight. There is a Picatinny rail on the top of the receiver for mounting purposes.

Beretta offers two editions of the Cx4 Storm. One is designed to work with magazines that are compatible with the Px4, while the other is made to work with magazines from the 90 series of pistols, such as the 92F and 96. Both 20 and 30-round magazines are available.

There are two terms found for similar thing: quick release scope mounts and quick detach scope mounts. Term quick release scope mounts is used mostly in Europe and quick detach scope mounts is used mainly in USA, although they mean the same thing. With these terms we describe a scope mount that can be quickly removed from the rifle in the field without using any tools and quickly attached back on the rifle when needed.

Main advantages:

  • possibility to use multiple scopes on the rifle,
  • easy transportation of the scope and the rifle separately,
  • if scope fails, it is possible to immediately detach it and use iron sights.

FIXED vs DETACHABLE scope mounts

Fixed scope mounts are mounted to the rifle with screws and sometimes even with glue. This means that it is impossible to attach or detach the scope mount using bare hands without using tools. It also means that they are not meant for constantly being attached on or detached off the rifle. Once you screw the mount on the rifle, it normally stays there for a longer period of use.

Detachable scope mounts offer possibility to attach or detach them without using any tools. This is extremely handy while transporting the rifle and the scope separately and it also offers multiple solutions of different optics on the same rifle. Detachable scope mounts can be attached or detached from the rifle in a matter of seconds, using bare hands.

DETACHABLE vs REPEATABLE scope mounts

It is important to know and understand expressions “detachable” and “repeatable” while talking about scope mounts. Term detachable scope mounts implies scope mounts that can be quickly attached or detached without using any tools. However, when you detach this kind of mount and attach it back on the rifle, it is recommended to zero the rifle before using it again. Procedure of detaching and again attaching the mount will probably need a sighting in before next shooting, because mount will not be secured on the rifle in the perfectly same position and conditions as it was before detaching it off the rifle.

On the contrary, repeatable scope mounts are most sophisticated mounts. These scope mounts are also detachable, however – they provide removing scope from the rifle and attaching it back again without zeroing the rifle every time. This means that they are made more precisely and that they are offering a possibility of using different optical sights / scope on the same rifle. These mounts are ideal for hunters who can use optical and iron sights interchangeably, depending on the needs in different situations. With the repeatable scope mounts, it is useful to keep them oiled as well as the upper part of the rifle, so that repeatability is more ensured. With a touch of oil, the repeatability might be better, because parts of the mount will always return to their previous locations.

Different types of repeatable scope mounts:

  • Pivot mounts,
  • Dentler mounts,
  • Picatinny repeatable mounts,
  • 12 mm dovetail repeatable mounts (for break barrel rifles, such as Steyr Duett, Blaser B750, Fair Combi, Fair SLX 800, Bettinsoli rifles, etc.),
  • Original repeatable mounts, made by manufacturers of rifles for their rifles (Blaser mount, Sauer SUM mount, Mauser M03 mount, Steyr Monoblock mount, etc.).

TIP OFF / ROLL OFF vs SLIDE ON mounts

Nowadays, there are a whole lot of different possibilities, made for attaching riflescopes on the rifles. There are also a lot of different expressions, having the same meaning. It is good to know that tip off and roll off mounts are basically the same thing. They represent quick release scope mounts for dovetails and rails which can be rolled or tipped off the rail vertically to the side of the rail. On the contrary, there are also slide on mounts available on the market. They represent quick release scope mounts that can be slided on or off the rail or dovetail from front or rear side of the rail / dovetail. All of these expressions are mainly used for separate rings that can be attached to the rails / dovetails. As far as functioning the rifle, it does not matter which one of these mounts you choose – tip / roll off or slide on mounts. If they are installed correctly, they are all going to work. However, the main difference between them is the principle of attaching them on rails on dovetails.
