The History of Sabatti

Sabatti’s history can be traced back to the early 18th century’s Val Trompia, a region in northern Italy that is historically well known for metalworking and arms manufacturing. We know of one Lodovico Sabatti working there as a gunsmith in the early 1700s, in the city of Gardone Val Trompia. He was regarded as an excellent barrel maker and a flintlock pistol maker, skills that later became somewhat of a trademark for the Sabatti family.

In the first half 1800s, a man by the name of Giuseppe Sabatti gained considerable fame as one of the best Damascus steel barrel manufacturers ever, thus further contributing to Sabatti’s rising influence in the craft. In fact, it was throughout the 19th century when several members of the Sabatti family became respected practitioners of the trade, some of whom opened their own workshops, while others joined forces with other gunsmiths to open companies, many of which are still in operation today. Sabatti members also played an important role as gunsmiths in the turbulent years of Italian unification.

After a seeming decline of the Sabatti family in the first half of the 20th century, Antonio Sabatti entered a partnership with Giuseppe Tanfoglio to form a new company almost immediately after World War II (in 1946).  Their joint company was named SATA (Sabatti and Tanfoglio), and it reinvigorated the Italian gun manufacturing business. They first put all their efforts into manufacturing high-quality hunting shotguns and rifles, but in 1956 they also introduced their first pistols for personal defense.

The partnership ended in 1960 with Giuseppe founding Tanfoglio while Antonio’s sons set up their own company, which until 1990 operated under the name FIAS (Fabbrica Italiana Armi Sabatti). They seemingly split SATA down the middle – Tanfoglio specialized in hand pistols only while Sabatti to this day remains a well-respected manufacturer of hunting shotguns and rifles. And just like in the past, the quality of the barrels and actions are still Sabatti’s main strengths. They even patented a new Multi-Radial Rifling (MRR) system which extends the life cycle of the rifle’s barrel, and due to the lack of traditional sharp corners, it prevents excessive bore fouling. MRR system thus increases the overall quality of barrels, making Sabatti rifles, such as Sabatti Urban Sniper, Saphire, Saphire E.R., or ST-18, a great pick.

Sabatti Tactical EVO US Rifle Review

Sabatti Tactical EVO US is a bolt-action rifle specifically conceived for PRS (Precision Rifle Series) shooting competitions, and it is a slightly modified version of the standard Tactical EVO rifle. There are some relatively minor differences between them which we’ll cover in this review, but they are essentially the same rifle, with the US version being more suitable for the American competitive shooting environment. In general, both EVO models are a testament to Sabatti’s devotion to entering and establishing itself in the tactical and competitive fields.

Sabatti Tactical EVO US boasts a cold-hammer-forged barrel with a 22 mm (0.86-inch) diameter and makes use of the Sabatti’s patented Multi-Radial Rifling (MRR) system which improves the rifle’s accuracy and the barrel longevity. The barrel comes in two different lengths: 56 cm (22-inch) and 66 cm (26-inch). It also comes with a 5/8” muzzle thread that is covered with a protective cap.  It has a noticeable “Blizzard” action which is characterized by the spirally fluted bolt. The chrome-plated steel bolt with a 60-degree throw has 3 locking lugs for safety purposes and a replaceable handle. The innovative action is of the push-feed style and is connected to the stock using only two supporting points, which makes it sort of “float” within the stock itself in a “suspended” manner. According to the manufacturer, this reduces the effects of the stock’s post-shot vibrations on the action, thus further improving the accuracy of the shooting.

In contrast to the standard Sabatti Tactical EVO that has a receiver resembling the older 1st Gen. Rover models, Sabatti Tactical EVO US comes with a pre-installed Picatinny rail. On the right side of the rail, behind the bolt handle, there is a two-position safety catch that locks the trigger and the bolt. The rifle has a three-lever Match trigger that has a pull weight of 600 g (1.3 lbs), and a removable 7-round AICS polymer magazine. The catch for removing the magazine is on the outside of the trigger guard. It (the rifle) ends in an aesthetically pleasing polymer buttstock with an adjustable cheek rest.

How is Sabatti Tactical EVO different than Sabatti Tactical EVO US?

Sabatti Tactical EVO got released in 2019, but in early 2020 Sabatti announced a new version of the model: Sabatti Tactical EVO US. Being shorter and lighter than the standard version, Tactical EVO US was specifically made to better fit the more dynamic environment of the American shooting competitions.

Sabatti Tactical EVO’s barrel is 71 cm (28-inch) long and measures 28 mm (1.1-inch) in diameter, but Sabatti Tactical EVO US’ barrel length is reduced to 66 cm (26-inch) or even 56 cm (22-inch), and its diameter to 22 mm (0.87-inch), which makes the rifle more mobile and thus better suited for the American market that usually features more shooter movement in its competitive environment. The weight of the Sabatti Tactical EVO US is further reduced by featuring a polymer stock that is approx. 440 g (0.97 lbs) lighter than the standard Tactical EVO’s heavier fiberglass-reinforced stock. This is likely Sabatti’s way of compensating for the heavier mounting surface that comes with the US version. As opposed to the standard Sabatti Tactical EVO that has 4 tapped holes on top of the receiver for mounting purposes, the Tactical EVO US comes with a factory-issued Picatinny rail instead, with an additional Picatinny rail on the underside of the fore-end as well. The US version is also equipped with a 7-round AICS (Accuracy International Chassis System) magazine, while the European model comes with a standard 3-round magazine.

Scope Mounts Interchangeable with Sabatti Tactical EVO US

Rifles That Have Scope Mounts Interchangeable with Sabatti Tactical EVO US

The necessary condition for rifles to have one-piece mounts interchangeable is that the mounting surfaces of these rifles match in every dimension. Since Sabatti Tactical EVO US comes with a pre-installed Picatinny rail, all of the one-piece scope mounts suitable for Picatinny will fit on the Tactical EVO US, too.

There’s even less dilemma around the interchangeability of two-piece mounts since they don’t have to meet any of the length requirements. Therefore, any two-piece scope mount that fits on a Picatinny rail will also fit on the Sabatti Tactical EVO US.

There are two terms found for similar thing: quick release scope mounts and quick detach scope mounts. Term quick release scope mounts is used mostly in Europe and quick detach scope mounts is used mainly in USA, although they mean the same thing. With these terms we describe a scope mount that can be quickly removed from the rifle in the field without using any tools and quickly attached back on the rifle when needed.

Main advantages:

  • possibility to use multiple scopes on the rifle,
  • easy transportation of the scope and the rifle separately,
  • if scope fails, it is possible to immediately detach it and use iron sights.

FIXED vs DETACHABLE scope mounts

Fixed scope mounts are mounted to the rifle with screws and sometimes even with glue. This means that it is impossible to attach or detach the scope mount using bare hands without using tools. It also means that they are not meant for constantly being attached on or detached off the rifle. Once you screw the mount on the rifle, it normally stays there for a longer period of use.

Detachable scope mounts offer possibility to attach or detach them without using any tools. This is extremely handy while transporting the rifle and the scope separately and it also offers multiple solutions of different optics on the same rifle. Detachable scope mounts can be attached or detached from the rifle in a matter of seconds, using bare hands.

DETACHABLE vs REPEATABLE scope mounts

It is important to know and understand expressions “detachable” and “repeatable” while talking about scope mounts. Term detachable scope mounts implies scope mounts that can be quickly attached or detached without using any tools. However, when you detach this kind of mount and attach it back on the rifle, it is recommended to zero the rifle before using it again. Procedure of detaching and again attaching the mount will probably need a sighting in before next shooting, because mount will not be secured on the rifle in the perfectly same position and conditions as it was before detaching it off the rifle.

On the contrary, repeatable scope mounts are most sophisticated mounts. These scope mounts are also detachable, however – they provide removing scope from the rifle and attaching it back again without zeroing the rifle every time. This means that they are made more precisely and that they are offering a possibility of using different optical sights / scope on the same rifle. These mounts are ideal for hunters who can use optical and iron sights interchangeably, depending on the needs in different situations. With the repeatable scope mounts, it is useful to keep them oiled as well as the upper part of the rifle, so that repeatability is more ensured. With a touch of oil, the repeatability might be better, because parts of the mount will always return to their previous locations.

Different types of repeatable scope mounts:

  • Pivot mounts,
  • Dentler mounts,
  • Picatinny repeatable mounts,
  • 12 mm dovetail repeatable mounts (for break barrel rifles, such as Steyr Duett, Blaser B750, Fair Combi, Fair SLX 800, Bettinsoli rifles, etc.),
  • Original repeatable mounts, made by manufacturers of rifles for their rifles (Blaser mount, Sauer SUM mount, Mauser M03 mount, Steyr Monoblock mount, etc.).

TIP OFF / ROLL OFF vs SLIDE ON mounts

Nowadays, there are a whole lot of different possibilities, made for attaching riflescopes on the rifles. There are also a lot of different expressions, having the same meaning. It is good to know that tip off and roll off mounts are basically the same thing. They represent quick release scope mounts for dovetails and rails which can be rolled or tipped off the rail vertically to the side of the rail. On the contrary, there are also slide on mounts available on the market. They represent quick release scope mounts that can be slided on or off the rail or dovetail from front or rear side of the rail / dovetail. All of these expressions are mainly used for separate rings that can be attached to the rails / dovetails. As far as functioning the rifle, it does not matter which one of these mounts you choose – tip / roll off or slide on mounts. If they are installed correctly, they are all going to work. However, the main difference between them is the principle of attaching them on rails on dovetails.
