Anschutz 64

The History of Anschutz

On the first of July in 1856, the son of the master gunsmith Johann Heinrich Gottlieb Anschütz, Julius Gottfried Anschütz founded the company J.G. ANSCHÜTZ in Zella-Mehlis, Thuringia. Forty years later, they relocated from the small workshop to their first factory with 76 employees. The founder of the J.G. ANSCHÜTZ company passed away in 1901. His sons Fritz and Otto took over their father's work. The latter died in 1923. The company was continued by Fritz August Anschütz supported by his two sons Max Fritz and Rudolf Charles Anschütz, the third ANSCHÜTZ generation. The factory was closed down and then destroyed and seized after the war.

1950 was the year of a fresh start in the Danube Bastion in Ulm where the company J.G. ANSCHÜTZ GmbH was founded. 7 people and 20 machines initially handled air pistols and gun repairs; afterward, Flobert rifles (rimfire rifles) and Match rifles were added. After the first sport shooting success, further successes came one after the other. Max Schmeling, a former boxing champion, also competed for Germany on the clay pigeon shooting national team. He was familiar with ANSCHÜTZ rifles because he was a target shooter and a hunter. He purchased some of them in Ulm and even suggested a change in the company's logo.

Dieter Anschütz, a member of the fourth generation, took over management in 1968 and proved himself as a good leader. The catchphrase "DIE MEISTER MACHER" was born out of the achievements of the ANSCHÜTZ target actions across the globe. It still holds true today. As managing director since 1992, Jochen Anschütz continues to administer the company with the aid of his son.

Anschutz 64 Rifle Review

Anschutz 64 is a Match grade action system introduced in 1964, designed for entry-level sport shooting and hunting rifles.  In comparison, the rifles of the Match 54 series are entirely focused on precision for Olympic competitions, while those of the Match 64 series are more universal. Just like with Match 54, there have been plenty of variants done to this day which are listed below.

The original Anschutz 64 Match is chambered in .22 LR. It has an adjustable stock and a match-grade barrel and trigger,  resulting in incredible accuracy. The rifle is also very durable, with a heavy steel construction that is built to last. Its barrel is 650 mm (25.6 inches) long, while its overall length is 1100 mm (43.3 inches).

When a Match rifle ages, a competitor usually swaps it for a newer one. However, the old rifle is still incredibly accurate and more than good for hunting and lower-grade competitions or beginners in shooting sports. While competing, the shooters use a diopter and front sights, that can then be taken down and replaced with a preferred rifle scope. Other parts should be adjusted accordingly as well, transforming the Match model into an outstanding hunting rimfire bolt-action rifle.

Pivot mounts are a special kind of repeatable mounts that are especially popular in Europe and mainly produced by European manufacturers. Most notable among them are German Companies like EAW (Ernst Apel Wurzburg), Recknagel, Henneberger and MAK. These Companies were also among the first to produce mounts of this type. Non German companies like Rusan are also following this trend.

Main benefits of pivot mounts, or swing mounts as they are sometimes called are:

  • 100% repeatability,
  • very quick and easy detaching and reattaching,
  • extremely durable; most mounts of this kind are tested on 10000 or more reattachments,
  • size and weight; light and small, elegant.

There are also some minor weaknesses that such mounts posses and they are: they are usually more expensive than other types of mounts, the installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith and most of these mounts are higher than 14 mm.

A distinct feature of pivot/swing mounts is the way the scope attaches to the rifle. The front foot of the mount on the scope is inserted in the front base under a 90 degrees angle to the barrel. Then the entire scope is pivoted around the front base until it is locked into position by the rear base.

Pivot mounts of all types enable windage correction on the rear base at the time of the mounts installation. There are three main types of pivot mounts which are distinguished by the type of the rear base:

  • EAW style rear base: produced by EAW and Rusan,
  • Dovetail rail base: produced by Recknagel, Henneberger, MAK and others.
  • Leupold type rear base
