Schultz & Larsen Hunter

The History of Schultz & Larsen

Schultz & Larsen is a Danish company that was founded in the mid-20th century by two brothers, Viggo, and Børge Schultz, and their friend, Jørgen Larsen. The company began as a small workshop producing hunting rifles and quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality firearms. In the 1950s, Schultz & Larsen began to expand its product line to include target rifles and other competitive shooting firearms.

Throughout the following decades, Schultz & Larsen continued to innovate and improve its products, and by the 1970s, the company had become one of the leading manufacturers of competitive shooting rifles in Europe. The company's rifles were used by many Olympic and international-level shooters and several world records have been set with rifles from Schultz & Larsen.

In recent years, Schultz & Larsen has shifted its focus towards producing high-end hunting rifles, while still maintaining its reputation for quality and precision. The company continues to operate in Denmark, where all of its rifles are still handmade by skilled craftsmen.

Schultz & Larsen Hunter Synthetic Rifle Review

The Schultz & Larsen Hunter Synthetic is a bolt-action similar to the Victory Synthetic model. It features a switch barrel system, which allows hunters to switch to other calibers in the group, making it a versatile choice for different hunting situations. The well-designed bolt features three locking lugs that lock into the barrel, ensuring safety and accuracy. The rifle has a solid bolt handle with a sixty-degree opening angle for easy operation, and a push-feed action for smooth and reliable feeding into the chamber.

At the right-rear side of the receiver, there is a three-position safety, which locks the bolt and the firing pin, ensuring safety while hunting. The unique mounting surface is designed for the Schultz & Larsen Slide & Lock scope mounts, but the possibility of mounting a Picatinny rail provide a variety of other options. There are two holes in the front and the back of the receiver that are 101 mm apart. The distance between them measures 22 mm on both sides. The rifle has a synthetic thumbhole stock with an adjustable comb, ensuring a comfortable and customizable fit for shooters. It also features a rubber recoil pad for added comfort and three pre-fitted sling swivel studs for easy carrying.

The Schultz & Larsen Hunter Synthetic bolt-action rifle weighs 3700 g (8.2 lbs) with a standard caliber barrel, making it a lightweight option for hunters who appreciate ease of use and maneuverability. The barrel length depends on the caliber, ranging from 560 - 650 mm (22 inches to 25.6 inches), ensuring optimal accuracy and bullet velocity for each caliber.

Pivot mounts are a special kind of repeatable mounts that are especially popular in Europe and mainly produced by European manufacturers. Most notable among them are German Companies like EAW (Ernst Apel Wurzburg), Recknagel, Henneberger and MAK. These Companies were also among the first to produce mounts of this type. Non German companies like Rusan are also following this trend.

Main benefits of pivot mounts, or swing mounts as they are sometimes called are:

  • 100% repeatability,
  • very quick and easy detaching and reattaching,
  • extremely durable; most mounts of this kind are tested on 10000 or more reattachments,
  • size and weight; light and small, elegant.

There are also some minor weaknesses that such mounts posses and they are: they are usually more expensive than other types of mounts, the installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith and most of these mounts are higher than 14 mm.

A distinct feature of pivot/swing mounts is the way the scope attaches to the rifle. The front foot of the mount on the scope is inserted in the front base under a 90 degrees angle to the barrel. Then the entire scope is pivoted around the front base until it is locked into position by the rear base.

Pivot mounts of all types enable windage correction on the rear base at the time of the mounts installation. There are three main types of pivot mounts which are distinguished by the type of the rear base:

  • EAW style rear base: produced by EAW and Rusan,
  • Dovetail rail base: produced by Recknagel, Henneberger, MAK and others.
  • Leupold type rear base
