Brünner 19 Rifle Review

CZ Brno is a well-established company that has been manufacturing small arms for many years. They have a reputation for producing high-quality firearms that are used by shooters and hunters around the world.

For some time, Frankonia distributed and sold Brno rifles under the name "Brünner" specifically for the German market. The reason for this was that "Brünner" is the German translation for the town of Brno in Czechoslovakia, where CZ Brno is located. This allowed German consumers to easily identify the rifles as being made by a respected Czech manufacturer. This approach is quite common in the firearms industry, where manufacturers will sometimes use distinct names for the same product to target different markets. Thus, the term "Brünner 19" is used here to refer to all CZ and Brno models that come with a 19.5 mm flat top dovetail for mounting purposes.

Despite being referred to as Brünner rifles, the receivers or any other structural components of the firearms were not stamped with this name or altered in any other way.

One of CZ Brno's most well-known product lines is the ZH series of combination guns and shotguns. These firearms are also widely recognized as "Brünner" in Germany, due to the company's association with the Brünner name in the German market.

Even today, some manufacturers of optic mounts and accessories still use the name Brünner or Brünner CZ in their catalogues. One such example is Recknagel, a German company that produces a wide range of shooting accessories, including mounts and bases for scopes and other optics.

Pivot mounts are a special kind of repeatable mounts that are especially popular in Europe and mainly produced by European manufacturers. Most notable among them are German Companies like EAW (Ernst Apel Wurzburg), Recknagel, Henneberger and MAK. These Companies were also among the first to produce mounts of this type. Non German companies like Rusan are also following this trend.

Main benefits of pivot mounts, or swing mounts as they are sometimes called are:

  • 100% repeatability,
  • very quick and easy detaching and reattaching,
  • extremely durable; most mounts of this kind are tested on 10000 or more reattachments,
  • size and weight; light and small, elegant.

There are also some minor weaknesses that such mounts posses and they are: they are usually more expensive than other types of mounts, the installation on the rifle should be done by a skilled gunsmith and most of these mounts are higher than 14 mm.

A distinct feature of pivot/swing mounts is the way the scope attaches to the rifle. The front foot of the mount on the scope is inserted in the front base under a 90 degrees angle to the barrel. Then the entire scope is pivoted around the front base until it is locked into position by the rear base.

Pivot mounts of all types enable windage correction on the rear base at the time of the mounts installation. There are three main types of pivot mounts which are distinguished by the type of the rear base:

  • EAW style rear base: produced by EAW and Rusan,
  • Dovetail rail base: produced by Recknagel, Henneberger, MAK and others.
  • Leupold type rear base
