Accuracy International AW

The History of Accuracy International

Accuracy International was founded in the UK in 1978 by Malcolm Cooper, a British Olympic medalist in shooting, and Sarah Cooper, his wife. The company was established with the aim of creating a high-precision rifle that would meet the needs of competitive target shooters and military snipers alike. In 1982, they introduced their first rifle, the AI Arctic Warfare rifle. The rifle's accuracy and reliability made it a favorite of military and law enforcement agencies around the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, AI continued to refine and expand its product line, developing new models like the AW50 and the AWM (Arctic Warfare Magnum). These rifles were designed to meet the needs of different users, from military snipers to police SWAT teams.

In the early 2000s, AI secured a contract to supply rifles to the British Armed Forces, cementing its reputation as a supplier of high-quality military equipment. The company's rifles were used by British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, where they earned a reputation for their accuracy and reliability. AI continued to expand its product line, offering rifles for civilian use, as well as law enforcement and military applications. Today, AI is known for its commitment to precision, quality, and reliability, and its rifles are widely used by military and law enforcement agencies around the world.

The company has always been focused on developing new technologies and refining existing ones to create rifles that are even more accurate, reliable, and durable. This commitment to innovation has led to the development of advanced features like detachable magazines, adjustable stocks, and precision triggers. AI has also developed proprietary technologies, such as the Quickloc barrel system, which allows users to quickly change barrels on their rifles. The company remains a small, independent company that is owned and operated by the Cooper family, who continue to oversee every aspect of the company's operations.

Accuracy International AW Rifle Review

The Accuracy International AW (Arctic Warfare) is a well-known precise bolt-action rifle that boasts exceptional performance and durability. The Match grade free-floating barrel is screwed into the action with a 38 mm (1.5-inch-long) long thread, providing a rigid mount for consistent cold shot performance. The proprietary high-grade steel flat action that is permanently bonded and bolted to the full-length aluminum chassis is superior to traditional bedding interfaces between actions and stocks. It features a six-locking-lugs robust bolt with a sixty-degree opening angle, allowing for smooth operation.

The AI AW's trigger assembly is adjustable for pull weights of 1500-2000 g (3.3-4.4lb) and can be easily removed for cleaning by undoing the two socket head cap screws. The two-stage trigger allows a large sear engagement to be maintained until the user takes up the first stage, reducing the chance of an accidental discharge if the rifle is jolted when cocked. A three-position safety mechanism is also fitted to the rifle, with the first position blocking the firing pin and locking the bolt in the closed position. The second position blocks the firing pin but allows the bolt to be operated so a live round may be removed from the chamber with the weapon in a safe condition, while the third position allows the weapon to be fired. The safety will only operate when the bolt is cocked. The AI AW's aluminum chassis is encased in polymer stock sides with an adjustable cheekpiece, providing a secure grip and a repeatable shooting position in all conditions.

The standard adjustable cheekpiece adjusts left/right as well as for height to obtain an optimum cheek position when using night vision equipment or telescopic sights with large objective lenses. The quick-adjust cheekpiece option offers a spring-loaded cheekpiece chosen in conjunction with the quick-adjust butt plate. Sling attachment points are mounted on each side of the weapon, and a front attachment point is situated below the fore-end and can be used to anchor a target-style sling or be replaced by an adapter for a Harris bipod. AW’s barrel measures 406 to 685 mm (16 to 27 inches) depending on the caliber. The folding chassis option reduces the overall length by 210 mm (8 inches) when folded and adds 200 g (0.4 lbs).
