Heym SR 40

About the Heym

HEYM was founded in 1865, in Suhl, Germany, by Friedrich Wilhelm Heym. Throughout its history, the company has encountered many hardships. These include economic crises, the Nazi regime, and the post-WW II occupation of Germany. Consequently, it has changed its location more than once. Despite that, the Heym brand remains deeply respected and its guns widely admired.

As early as 1891, HEYM manufactured and patented the first hammerless drilling, a three-barreled hunting rifle with three triggers and three hammers on the same axis. Afterwards, the company began to expand, producing drillings, shotguns, and over and under rifle-shotgun combinations. They predominantly exported their products to Russia and the USA. In 1920, the company began producing Anson & Deeley Drillings, double rifle drillings, three trigger drillings, double rifles, and rifle shotgun combination guns.

After World War II, HEYM made a fresh start in the American part of divided Germany. There, the company manufactured products such as cuckoo clocks, slide rules, and spinning wheels since the ownership and making of guns were not allowed. HEYM restored its primary activity in 1952 when the revised laws again allowed the ownership and making of certain hunting and sporting guns.

In 1998, the owner of the company became Thomas Wolkmann. The company's name was first changed to HEYM Waffenfabrik GmbH (Limited), and then in 2007 to the present name, HEYM AG.

Heym SR 40 Rifle Review

Heym SR 40 is a bolt-action rifle and a short action version of the Heym SR series with an action based on Mauser 4000. In the middle of the 1960s, the Heym company signed a working agreement with Mauser to produce bolt-action rifles under the Mauser label. However, at the beginning of the '70s that deal was terminated and Heym renamed the existing products to the Heym SR series, including some minor changes in the design of their bolt-actions. In 1975, Heym SR 40 was presented and manufactured for twenty years – in 1995, the production was discontinued.

The rifle comes with a drilled and tapped blued metal receiver that houses a bolt with dual locking lugs that lock up with the action’s casing. SR 40 utilizes a Mauser-type locking system allowing for a smooth bolt operation. As the rifle is available in both - left and right-side versions, the three-position safety catch that locks the bolt and the trigger can be positioned on either side. When safety is put in the middle position, the bolt can be safely opened for unloading the chamber.

Standard action magazine can hold up to five and the magnum action up to three cartridges which can be removed using a hinged floorplate. In addition, the user can choose between three trigger options, namely a single-stage adjustable, single set, or double set trigger that is surrounded by an aluminium trigger guard. The rifle comes with included iron sights with the rear one having an adjustable elevation notch.

The possible barrel length for Heym SR 40 is 597 mm (23.5-inch).
