The History of Chapuis

Chapuis Armes is a company that has been involved in the gun-making industry since the beginning of the 20th century. In 1934, Jean Louis Chapuis founded a small workshop in the Loire Valley, which gradually grew into a larger family business after World War 2. Initially, the company focused on making gun parts such as actions and barrels for the St. Etienne gun industry. However, the company quickly gained recognition for producing high-quality double rifles, and in the 1970s, they began manufacturing shotguns as well.

In the 1980s, Chapuis Armes moved its production to a more modern plant and incorporated CNC machines to enhance their production capabilities. The company has remained under the ownership and management of Jean Louis Chapuis's descendants throughout the century and in the 90s, Vincent and David Chapuis took over the management of the company.

Nowadays, Chapuis Armes produces high-quality rifles and shotguns in different configurations. The company's popular weapons include the Super Orion 3 series of over-and-under rifles, the Progress 3 series of side-by-side rifles, and the newly developed ROLS straight pull bolt action rifles, which are available in different finishes. They are also widely recognized for their premium shotguns, such as the FAISAN or CHASSEUR series. Besides their line of over/under and side-by-side rifles and shotguns, Chapuis Armes also manufactures the Manurhin double-action revolver since 1998.

Although the Beretta Holding Group acquired Chapuis Armes in 2019, the company continues to be run on a daily basis by David and Vincent Chapuis, the grandsons of the company's founder.

Chapuis X4 Rifle Review

The Chapuis X4 is a double-barrel side-by-side rifle chambered for 9.3x74 R and .30-06 Spr. with an English-style cheekpiece and the stock made of high-end grade-3 Circassian walnut material. The left barrel is attached to the rib while the right barrel is not restrained, resulting in a free-floating effect. This enhances accuracy and consistency when hunting and target shooting.

Additionally, the rifle is machined to accept Recknagel scope mounts for easy scope attachment. The X4 features an adjustable standing rear and ramp front sight system that allows for precise aiming and shooting.

Additionally, it comes with a rubber recoil pad that minimizes the impact of the recoil and provides a comfortable shooting experience. Like other Chapuis models from the express family, it boasts double triggers (although single trigger options are available), manual safety positioned on the action tang, and automatic ejectors. The lever that opens the action when pushed to the right is located at the top of the receiver.

Chapuis X4 comes with a machined rib on the top of the receiver which can be used for scope mounting purposes.

The picture above shows the two segments with screws located on the rib of the rifle. These segments serve as the designated cutout spots for mounting the Recknagel bases, which allow for the attachment of scopes or other optical devices. It's worth noting that the screws on these segments match the overall appearance of the rifle and are thus an integral part of its aesthetic.
